Pre-Tryout FAQs
Who can tryout? Any player born in 2014 - 2006. Additionally, 2015s may register for tryouts in the u11 age group with approval from a director of coaching to ensure this is appropriate for you.
Who has to tryout? Everyone must register and attend tryouts if you wish to be considered for a VUFC 2024/25 roster spot. New team rosters are built each year and do not carry over, year over year.
Which tryout should I register for? Your player should register for the level of play that they would like to participate in. If they are interested in playing on ECNL-RL, they should register for ECNL-RL tryouts. If they intend on playing NPL, they should register for NPL tryouts. You can only select ONE registration type. For U17 to U19 players: any player wishing to be considered for the ECNL-RL or ECNL-RL2 team (previously known as NPL Composite), please register for the ECNL-RL tryout.
Can I tryout for an older age group? Players must register and participate with your current age group. Players may be considered for placement on an older age group team after tryouts are complete.
What if I can't attend my tryout? All players must register and attend all required tryouts. For U11 and U12, there are two required tryout dates. For U13-U19, there is one required tryout date with the potential for callbacks or use of supplemental tryout dates. Please email tryouts@vaunited.org and include your player name, birth year, gender, and primary geographic location (ROA or NRV), and reason if you are unable to attend your assigned tryout, including if injured.
How do I change my tryout registration? Email office@vaunited.org
How will I know if tryout dates/times/locations change? The website will be the PRIMARY source of truth for tryout schedules. Notifications will be sent for schedule changes that occur AFTER 4/27 in PlayMetrics. Please check your settings to be sure notifications are ON (alerts, inbox, etc.). Note that changes up until 4/27 will only display on the website. Please refresh your browser when viewing on mobile devices to ensure you are seeing the most current information.
What do I need to wear for tryouts? Players should wear a black shirt. All players will receive a Tryout Number.
What do I need to bring to tryouts? Please bring a soccer ball with your name on it, water bottle and shinguards.
What time do I arrive for tryouts? Please be sure you have registered 72 hours prior to your first tryout. Tryout check-in will open one hour prior to the start time. We encourage everyone to arrive 30 minutes early to allow for warm-up and completion of check-in process.
Where do I check in at tryouts? All players must check-in at the registration tent/tables each day prior to going to the fields.
Where can parents observe during tryouts? VA Tech Rec fields - outside the fence Roanoke facilities- behind designated fencing/taped off areas
How and when will players that signed up for ECNL-RL tryouts be notified if they should go to NPL tryouts or not? If you are trying out for an ECNL-RL team, please save the date for NPL tryouts as there is often a very short turnaround time between these tryout dates. Players will be notified within 48 hours if they need to attend the NPL tryout. If you do not receive a player offer for an ECNL-RL team, you will automatically be invited to an NPL tryout (no need to register again). This notification will come via PlayMetrics. Reasons for inviting a player to an NPL tryout include: not being offered a roster spot on an ECNL-RL team or could be used as a callback for players that are still under consideration for ECNL-RL and need further evaluation.
Does not receiving a player offer from an ECNL-RL tryout mean I will automatically be placed on an NPL team? No, NPL tryouts are independent of ECNL-RL tryouts. If requested to attend an NPL tryout, you are still competing for an NPL or NPL Classic roster spot. Attending an ECNL-RL tryout does NOT guarantee placement on an NPL team and does not prioritize you over other players who registered only for NPL tryouts.
How many players will be on a team? U11 to U12: 12-14 players U13 to U16: 15-17 players U17 to U19: 15- 20 players
Why will U17 to U19 have more players on the roster? At older age groups, players may miss due to collegiate visits, school functions, etc. This allows us to ensure all teams are properly outfitted with players
