VIRGINIA UNITED FC - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS History of Virginia United Futbol Club. Virginia United FC (VUFC) was initially formed in 2022 as a partnership between NRU and Valley United to gain access to the ECNL Regional League (VPSL), the highest league platform available in the region. Virginia United FC was granted a one-year provisional membership by the VPSL. VUFC announced expansion in March of 2023 with an invitation and agreement for VBR Star to join as an equal member. Why did the clubs choose to unite and expand Virginia United FC in 2023? A part of our long-term vision was to unite soccer in southwest VA and having all travel players and teams play under the Virginia United FC banner allows this vision to become a reality. Through this alliance, we can elevate the experience for travel players in Southwest Virginia. Uniting allows Virginia United FC to share our resources and our strengths to provide our players the greatest opportunity to succeed. The purpose for furthering the alliance was to maintain our provisional membership in the VPSL with hopes to gain full membership next year. It was necessary for both Virginia United FC and VBR Star to unite to maintain status in the VPSL. As provisional members, additional evaluation and board vote by VPSL is needed to gain full membership. Other clubs in the VPSL are aligning and merging their teams, thus elevating the level of competition. What will the club structure look like? A nine-member advisory board, comprised of three members from each alliance member club’s board, will be working with the executive staffs of each club and independent facilitators with deep experience with youth soccer club mergers to finalize the legal and operational structure of the unified VUFC structure. This is expected to take several months to complete. We will keep everyone informed as progress is made. How does the Alliance benefit the player experience? This alliance will significantly strengthen our player pool and overall strength of teams, provide access to additional training facilities and coaching staff, and increase our footprint in top tier leagues in VA and beyond. When are tryouts dates for the Fall Season? Where will tryouts be held? Tryout dates will be announced on Sunday, March 19, 2023. Tryouts will be held on multiple dates by age group. U13-U19 will have tryouts in both Blacksburg and Roanoke, regardless of potential team assignment. Players should make best effort to attend all designated sessions in each location. U11-U12 will have tryouts for each home-based location. Players from Roanoke should only attend Roanoke tryouts. Players from the New River Valley should only attend Blacksburg tryouts. Do you have to be a current New River United, VBR Star, or Valley United player to try out for Virginia United teams? Virginia United tryouts are open to anyone in the region that would like to participate in our programming. Where do we register for tryouts and programming? Registration links will be sent out separately at a later date. What Leagues will VUFC compete in? VUFC teams will compete in the ECNL Regional League (VPSL) and the National Premier League (NPL). One combined ECNL-RL team will be formed per age group and gender. NPL teams will be formed in both locations as able and named according to the league they will participate in. VUFC staff is currently working to determine the number of teams that will be needed for each age bracket to assist with tryouts, coaching selection, etc. When will the new coaching slate be announced? Who will be coaching each team? The VUFC coaching slate for the 2023 fall season will be announced prior to tryouts for all ECNL-RL teams. Coaching pools will be announced for all NPL teams and finalized once teams are formed. Coaches will be utilized from all of the member clubs. What will be the format for training during the Fall season and beyond? ECNL-RL and NPL training expectations will differ. Outlines of training and travel expectations per league will be shared at a later date but will include: number of nights per week to train, locations for training based upon team make-up, expectations for players in need of alternative practice plan. What will happen for our Pre-ECNL (U11 and U12) teams? We will have separate Roanoke and New River based teams that will train only in their respective locations. Can a player decide to play on an NPL team instead of an ECNL-RL team? Yes, if any player is offered a spot on an ECNL-RL team but does not wish to participate, they will have the option to play on an NPL team if they so choose. If you do not wish to be considered for an ECNL-RL spot, you may indicate this on your tryout registration. What will happen if a player doesn’t make an ECNL-RL team but does not have a second team alternative in his/her location for a particular age group? Any player that does not have an age-appropriate home-based team to play on may be offered a spot on a banded (combined age groups, example 2009/2010) home based team. Players may be offered the option to play for a team in an alternate location. These players will be provided with an alternative practice plan (allowing home-based training with different age teams and traveling to their assigned team one night per week away from their home location). What will be the membership fees / dues each year? Will parents be able to keep payment plans like before? VUFC leadership is currently working on pricing for all levels of play. Various payment plans will be available. Will we continue to have financial assistance? Yes, requests for financial assistance will continue as it does today, which includes an annual application and review process. Information for the 540-345-7820 season is under review with our advisory board and will be posted to our website once finalized. What is the impact to recreational players? Recreational players will continue to have offerings in their home locations as each club will continue with independent programming for the 540-345-7820 season. This should have little to no impact on recreational players. 17. Please explain the breakdown of the team names within the club. Virginia United Futbol Club has teams in two leagues: ECNL Regional League (RL) - more information here NPL - more information here Both are governed by U.S. Club Soccer Our ECNL Regional League (RL) team offers the highest level of play for our club in Virginia’s Premier Soccer League (VPSL) It’s important to note that our ECNL RL team requires travel for training sessions between Roanoke and the New River Valley (NRV). The majority of our NPL and NPL Classic teams are broken down geographically, so there are NPL-ROA and NPL-NRV teams with a few of the oldest age teams also merged between ROA and the NRV. If your player is in our younger age groups, U11 or U12, the highest level of play is on our Pre-ECNL teams and those are broken down between Roanoke and the NRV. VA United FC participates in the highest level of play offered by VPSL (Virginia Premier Soccer League) which is the ECNL Regional League (RL). There is a higher level, the ECNL National League (NL) governed by US Club Soccer, where teams from our region play in the Mid-Atlantic Conference. It is a goal of VA United FC to one day be invited into the ECNL National League (NL). We understand that there are many more questions and additional questions will arise. We will share additional FAQs and announce town hall dates soon. Our staff and advisory board are working diligently to prepare for the upcoming season, we look forward to seeing your player at tryouts!
